MEXT Scholarship Overview:
The Graduate School of Science at The University of Tokyo invites international students to apply for the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship 2025. This scholarship aims to cultivate individuals who will foster mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and their home countries, contributing to global development.
MEXT Scholarship Eligibility Criteria:
- Academic Excellence: International students with exceptional academic records aiming to commence studies in October 2025 at the Master’s or Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo.
- Admission Requirement: Applicants must have completed their application for admission to the Master’s/Doctoral Program according to the “Instructions for International Students applying to the Graduate School of Science (Special Selection for International Applicants)”.
- Nationality: Only applicants from nationalities specified by MEXT are eligible. The list of eligible nationalities for this year will be announced after the application period.
- Age Requirement: Applicants must be born on or after April 2, 1990.
- Field of Study: Applicants should choose a field of study related to their previous academic background that is available at the University of Tokyo.
- Language Proficiency:
- English: Minimum proficiency equivalent to B2 on the CEFR scale (e.g., TOEFL iBT 72, IELTS 5.5).
- Japanese: Minimum N2 level in JLPT or completion of a Japanese-instructed educational program that meets the entrance requirements for the Master’s or Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Science.
MEXT Scholarship Duration:
- Master’s Program: October 2025 – September 2027 (2 years)
- Doctoral Program: October 2025 – September 2028 (3 years)
MEXT Scholarship Benefits:
- Monthly Allowance:
- Master’s Program: 144,000 yen/month
- Doctoral Program: 145,000 yen/month
- Additional 2,000-3,000 yen for study in designated regions.
- Travel Costs:
- To Japan: MEXT will cover the airfare according to the specified travel schedule and route.
- From Japan: MEXT will provide airfare for return to the home country within the final month of the scholarship period.
- Tuition Fees: Exemption from enrollment and tuition fees.
MEXT Scholarship Application Process:
Applicants must submit the necessary documents for the MEXT Scholarship and the admission application for the Graduate School of Science (Master’s/Doctoral Program).
